What is the most effective online advertising for small businesses and what can you do to make it MOST effective?

1) Map out a plan! Every business must have a budget for advertising. The well known fact is that if people don't know about you or your site, they certainly are not going to find you or your website. Determine what your budget should be to bring new customers to your site.

2) Write down your goals and realistically target specific dates to reach your goals. 

3) Research all possible advertising vehicles that are affordable and within your budget. Don't believe everything you read. Advertising vehicles such as e-mail blasts, targeted e-mail blasts, targeted visitors to your website, guaranteed sign-ups, website hits, etc. that promise thousands or millions of visitors to your website usually do not result in any generated sales for you. Don't waste your money! If you want to try any of these, try $10 worth of targeted visitors and you'll see that you might as well have spent it on a coffee and donut instead.

4) Pay per click advertising and banner advertising can be effective, however, they can be very expensive.....and, sometimes it can be hit or miss - with results varying a lot depending on your product or service. Before you spend money on these vehicles, make sure that your website is analyzed, optimized, and focused. This way, your results will be much better!

5) Select a good SEO campaign. The one thing you don't want to do is to lock into a 6 month SEO campaign that costs you $1,800.00, $2,400.00, or $3,000.00 or more. Look at what is being offered for the price that you will be paying. One thing you don't want to do is spend big money to find out that your SEO program usually takes 4-6 months before you see any kind of results. Then when you stop your service (usually after 6 months), your site is no longer being optimized and your visitor count goes down dramatically. Also check to see how many work hours are dedicated to optimizing your site. This is an important factor and most programs really don't dedicate too many hours to your site - so don't be fooled by SEO programs that can't give you this information.

6) What's a good plan before you decide how to advertise your site? You must ask yourself this question before you advertise. You must map out a plan before you start - or have someone that can help you, provide you with good, sound advice (not just someone who wants to sell you their advertising program).
